Double bank

Castle Hill is about 2 kilometres of double bank on the River Bray near South Molton, which draws its headwaters from the slopes of Exmoor. The water quality is good and the flow is fast, with pools and glides broken up by riffles.

It is wild, lightly managed water, so expect plenty of bankside and overhead vegetation, and some tricky casting. The Passport recommends wading in chest waders with a staff and a 7 to 9 foot rod rated 1 to 4 weight, using roll, bow and arrow and side casts. The Passport describes it as peaceful, solitary fishing.

Fly only, with single barbless hooks when fishing catch and release. A day costs 5 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.

It rises on Exmoor, close to the border with Somerset, and gives its name to several villages, among them Brayford. Its first few miles run right by the county line. The water off the moor is clear and fast,…
