Clatworthy Reservoir is in west Somerset, near the village of Clatworthy, and Wessex Water runs the fishing here itself. It is fly fishing only, for rainbow and brown trout, and the water stays cold into early summer, so it keeps fishing well right through the season. Fishing from a boat is popular here, with plenty of bays and arms to explore, and the fish have a name for fighting hard.

A day ticket lets you take five trout, and a two fish ticket is available later in the day or during the summer months. A beginner ticket comes with rod hire and a few pointers from the ranger, by arrangement in advance. Whatever you keep counts toward your ticket’s limit, but any brown trout has to go back in the water unharmed, whatever its size.

The trout season runs from late February to the end of October. Tickets are booked online through Wessex Water, and you collect your permit from the fishing lodge before you start. The lodge can be reached on +44 1984 624658 or by email at clatworthy@wessexwater.co.uk.
