About Wessex Water Fisheries

Wessex Water runs the trout fishing on three of its Somerset reservoirs itself: Sutton Bingham near Yeovil, Hawkridge near Spaxton, and Clatworthy in west Somerset. All three are fly fishing only, with a day ticket, a reduced two fish ticket, a beginner ticket with rod hire, and season tickets, including one ticket that covers all three waters for the season.

Every ticket is a kill ticket rather than catch and release: whatever you keep counts against the bag limit on your ticket, though any brown trout has to go back in the water unharmed, whatever its size. Wading is allowed up to thigh height, and boats are available at all three reservoirs, with or without an engine, when water levels allow. Fishing starts at 8am every day, and the finishing time changes by month.

Tickets are booked online through Wessex Water’s own booking system, and a signed permit is completed at the fishing lodge before you start. Each reservoir has its own fishing lodge, phone number and email address.

FAQ

Wessex Water Fisheries FAQs

Common questions about Wessex Water Fisheries and its beats, answered in one place.

01What are the opening hours for Wessex Water Fisheries?
Opening hours are listed in the Contact Information section on the Wessex Water Fisheries page. Many chalk stream fisheries operate from first light to dusk — confirm exact hours with the fishery when you book.
02Does Wessex Water Fisheries offer accommodation?
Wessex Water Fisheries does not currently list on-site accommodation. The surrounding area has a range of options — the fishery can often suggest somewhere local when you book.
03Can I buy a multi-day pass or season permit?
Wessex Water Fisheries offers day tickets; no season membership is currently listed. Check the beat pages for individual pricing, or contact the fishery for multi-day rates.
04Are beginners or less experienced anglers welcome?
Chalk stream fishing can be technically demanding, but Wessex Water Fisheries has beats that range in difficulty. If you're new to dry fly fishing, mention it when you book and the keeper can point you to the most forgiving water. Tackle hire is available, so you don't need to bring your own gear.
05Is the fishery suitable for anglers with mobility difficulties?
Some beats at Wessex Water Fisheries have flat bank access that may suit anglers with limited mobility. Check the individual beat pages — those with disabled access are marked clearly. It's always worth calling ahead so they can make any practical arrangements.
06What should I expect when I arrive?
On arrival at Wessex Water Fisheries, report to the fishery office or meet the keeper as instructed when you booked. You'll be shown to your beat, given any local rules specific to that stretch, and told about parking, facilities, and the finish time. Carry your EA rod licence and booking confirmation at all times.
07 Is club water available, or is it day ticket only?
Wessex Water Fisheries does not currently list club water arrangements. It operates on a day ticket basis — check the page or contact the fishery for current options.
