Fishing methods
The Dulverton Angling Association’s Haddeo water is nearly a mile of the River Haddeo, fished from both banks upstream of the junction pool where it meets the Exe. It lies in the small valley below Wimbleball Lake on a private estate, with no public footpaths on the beats.
The river is never very wide and a smaller rod helps. It has runs, riffles, pools, tight bends and deep holes under tree roots, and holds wild brown trout, salmon parr and smolts and some grayling. The brown trout are generally three or four to the pound, and a nine or ten inch fish is a good one. Small, imitative flies do best, and light tackle of AFTM 3 to 6 suits it. Wading is easy and thigh waders are usually enough.
Because the dam holds back floodwater, the Haddeo often fines down sooner than the Barle and the Exe after rain, so it can be fishable when they are in spate. In a long dry spell it can run low. Cables cross the beat in a couple of places, away from the best fishing.
