Errwood Reservoir sits in the Goyt Valley in the Peak District, a few miles from Buxton, between Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield. It was completed in 1968, opened by the Duchess of Kent, to supply drinking water to Stockport, and the land around it is owned by United Utilities. The fishing rights, including three feeder streams at the head of the valley, are held by Errwood Fly Fishing Club. The reservoir covers 85 acres and is fed by the River Goyt.

Rainbow trout are stocked regularly and run to a good size, and the reservoir also holds brown trout, both stocked and naturally occurring; no brown trout may ever be killed. A day ticket allows three fish to be kept, after which it is catch and release only, fishing from sunrise to sunset. Fly fishing only is permitted; floats, spinners, ledgering and bait are not.

Fourteen named banks run around the water, from the open casting at Duffers Bank and West Bank to the longer walk out to the Island. There is no wading anywhere on Errwood, and the dam wall itself is out of bounds. Dogs are allowed, kept well back from the water’s edge, and junior anglers must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder.

Day tickets are bought online through the Catch app or from one of six tackle shops around Buxton, Stockport and the wider Peak District, and run from the third Saturday in March to the end of November.

Stocking and fish species

moderate stocking · Rainbow trout are stocked regularly. Brown trout are present too, both stocked and naturally occurring, and may not be killed.
