Double bank

This is Ilkley Angling Association’s town water, a double bank stretch of the River Wharfe running downstream from the old packhorse bridge for about a mile. The association describes large stocks of wild brown trout, to over 4lb, and grayling to 2lb.

The river is wide enough for fly casting, with mostly easy wading and a mixture of pools, glides and rapids. Bait fishing is allowed too, with worm and maggot. The association says it is low cost to fish because there is no restocking: an adult day ticket is £11 and a week ticket £50. Well made paths lead from several riverside car parks, and the water is an easy walk from Ilkley railway station and the bus depot, with public toilets, cafes, pubs and shops close by.

Trout can be fished by day ticket from 25 March to 30 September and grayling from 16 June to 14 March. Up to two trout of 10 to 14 inches may be kept in a day, and all grayling go back.
