Fishing methods
Kilnsey Angling Club’s Upper Wharfedale water follows the River Wharfe from the club’s lower limit up through Kettlewell, Starbotton, Buckden and Hubberholme to Beckermonds, and takes in the headwater becks, Oughtershaw Beck and Cray Gill. The club’s beat maps divide it into sections, and a day ticket holder is allocated one of them each morning.
Below Kettlewell Bridge the water is stocked each year and the fish tend to run larger, with the occasional specimen. Above it the water is not stocked and the wild trout are generally smaller, which can make for enjoyable if sometimes challenging fishing. The limestone the river runs over supports plenty of insect life, and the water varies from streamy upland runs to deep pools and slow glides, so there is pocket water for nymphing and dry fly fishing. When the main river is unfishable in a spate, the club has stretches of feeder becks.
Visitors fish for trout on an artificial fly. Day tickets are limited each day and cost £40, or £20 for anglers aged 18 to 35 on the day only. Grayling can be fished by members but not by day ticket holders.
