Fishing methods
Malham Tarn is fished from a boat for wild brown trout, fly only and catch and release. The Friends of Malham Tarn run the day tickets under a lease from the National Trust, and the 2026 season runs from 1 May to 30 September, with fishing from 9am to 5pm on the dates the wardens open.
A public day is a boat for two or three anglers, and fishing alone is not permitted. The ticket covers the boat, electric engine, battery, net and drogue and eight hours on the water. There is no bank fishing, and the boat stays on the water except in an emergency.
Tickets are booked online in advance and are not sold on the day. Dates for each month are released on the first of the month before, and one angler can lead only one boat booking a month. Fishing is cancelled if the forecast mean wind speed is over 20 mph at any time between 9am and 5pm, and bookings cancelled less than 48 hours ahead are not refunded. Everyone needs a current Environment Agency rod licence.
