About Malham Tarn Fishery

Malham Tarn, in the Yorkshire Dales, is a lake of wild brown trout fished by fly from a boat. The fishing is run by the Friends of Malham Tarn, a non-profit group of ten wardens, under a lease from the National Trust, who own the estate.

Only two boats work the tarn, one for the wardens and one for the public, so a day out here is booked ahead online and not bought on the day. Each public day is a boat for two or three anglers, with the electric engine, battery, net and drogue supplied, and a warden meets you at the West Boathouse to check you in and out. Fishing is catch and release, with barbless hooks.

The tarn is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so every angler follows a Check, Clean, Dry routine and arrives with clean, dry kit. Dates are released a month at a time, and the 2026 season runs from 1 May to 30 September.
