The Erme beats give the best of both worlds, the association says: easy pools on the outskirts of Ivybridge and hidden pockets off the beaten track. They are not long, but they hold quality pools and captivating trout fishing.

The association’s map shows two sections, a Playing Field beat with parking by the playing field and named pools including Corner Pool, Bridge Pool and Long Pool, and a Woodland beat further downstream, reached by a footpath from a layby that takes two cars.

Day tickets are bought online on the day you fish, cover every beat for 24 hours from 4am, and are at the moment sold for salmon at £20.

It flows south through a landscape of Bronze Age remains, including the longest stone row on the moor, then leaves Dartmoor at Ivybridge and continues past Ermington, Modbury and Holbeton.…
