Scout Dike Reservoir sits above the market town of Penistone in South Yorkshire, in the foothills of the Pennines on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It is run by Barnsley Trout Club, which has fished the water since the club was founded in 1958.

The reservoir holds native brown trout, some of them into double figures, alongside rainbow and blue trout stocked regularly from March to November, running from a pound and a half up to double figures as well. Fly fishing is the main method here, but spinning and bait fishing are also permitted, with Mepps-type single-hook spinners and worm, maggot or caster as bait. Barbless or correctly de-barbed hooks are required throughout.

A day ticket allows two fish to be kept, with a shorter one-fish ticket also available, and junior tickets are catch and release only. Any brown trout or coarse fish caught must be returned, as must rainbow and blue trout under 28cm. Wading is allowed but not above the knee, and dogs must be kept on a lead.

Day tickets are sold from the fishery office on the bankside, by card only, from the 1st of March to the 30th of November, and a valid Environment Agency rod licence is required. There is a tarmac car park with disabled spaces, and level footpaths run the whole way around the water.

Stocking and fish species

moderate stocking · Rainbow and blue trout are stocked regularly between March and November, from a pound and a half up to double figures. The reservoir also holds native brown trout, some into double figures, which must always be returned.
