The Mells Estate water is Frome and District Angling Association’s stretch of the River Mells, also called the Mells Stream, running down from Mells village through the Wadbury Valley to the top of the association’s Vallis Vale water. On the way it passes the old Fussells’ Iron Works and the “Mells Waterfall”, which is the outflow from Whatley Quarry.

The association describes the Mells as the most prolific of Somerset’s small stream wild trout waters. The trout are wild brown trout and will take most nymphs or dry flies that come into view. It is best fished by wading and moving quietly upstream, casting to fish that show or drifting a fly past likely lies.

It is members only, fly only with barbless or crushed barb hooks, and catch and release, from 1 April to 15 October.
