Double bank

Itchen Carrier is Avington Trout Fishery’s half-mile, double-bank stretch of chalk stream on the River Itchen at Avington, Hampshire, cut when the fishery’s lakes were dug out in the late 1960s and the main flow diverted alongside them. Unlike the three stocked lakes next door, this is wild water: wild brown trout and grayling, occasionally a coarse fish, and no stocking of any kind.

Fishing is strictly catch and release, dry fly or nymph only, a single fly fished upstream, maximum hook size 10 short shank, barbless hooks only, and no wading under any circumstances. Start at the bottom of the beat and work up so you’re not disturbing water you still have to fish. These are proper wild fish that spook easily, which is exactly what draws anglers who have never caught a wild brown trout or a grayling before. A day ticket is £70, bought on its own rather than bundled with the lakes.
