Lake One is the smallest of Avington Trout Fishery’s three lakes on the River Itchen at Avington, Hampshire: six to eight feet deep, and fished hard against a line of lime trees that shade the water right through summer. The bank beside the carrier has long been a favourite swim, and there is enough open ground here for a novice to practise a back cast without finding the trees behind. Fishing from the right-hand side gives the clearest view of cruising fish, since the trees on the far bank cut the glare off the surface. The bottom end of the lake, or at least the lower third, can fish particularly well.
Lake One is stocked daily with high-quality triploid rainbow trout reared on the fishery’s own farm, with brown trout introduced from late spring. There is no catch and release here: fly fishing only, wet or dry, single fly, maximum hook size 8. Tickets are sold by the fish, two for £100 up to four for £130, and every ticket also covers catch-and-release fishing on Lake Three the same day.
