Lake Three is Avington Trout Fishery’s catch-and-release lake on the River Itchen at Avington, Hampshire, the deepest of the three and always holding fish. Through the afternoon the light comes over your shoulder from the field bank, which helps with spotting, and careful, close-range casting into tight swims works better here than covering water with a long line. Trees at the lower end, saplings twenty years ago, have grown up enough to give the kind of cover that rewards a catapult cast under the branches.

Lake Three is regularly restocked with a mix of smaller trout, including browns and the occasional tiger trout, alongside rainbows. Everything caught here goes back: fly fishing only, wet or dry, single fly, maximum hook size 8. A ticket on its own is £75 for the day, and the same water is included free with any of the two, three or four-fish tickets sold for Lakes One and Two.
