Lake Two is the largest of Avington Trout Fishery’s three lakes on the River Itchen at Avington, Hampshire: four feet deep at the far end, with holes running to thirteen feet. The tree cover here is open enough that the wind still reaches the water even in summer, which makes for good buzzer fishing, and there is plenty of open bank for an easy cast. An overhanging tree at the bottom of the lake is a well-known spot for a catapult cast under the branches, and a bed of rushes along the right bank is worth working even where it looks unfished, since trout often lie up between two well-used swims rather than in either of them.
Lake Two is stocked daily with high-quality triploid rainbow trout reared on the fishery’s own farm, with brown trout introduced from late spring. There is no catch and release here: fly fishing only, wet or dry, single fly, maximum hook size 8. Tickets are sold by the fish, two for £100 up to four for £130, and every ticket also covers catch-and-release fishing on Lake Three the same day.
