Coln St Aldwyns gives you two and a quarter miles of the River Coln to range over, by the village of the same name in Gloucestershire. Fishing Breaks sells it as day rods and calls the Coln a true limestone stream and the best trout river in the Cotswolds. Some of the beat runs through open meadows and some through woodland.

There is a good head of wild trout, topped up by regular stocking, and plenty of grayling. There is a spectacular mayfly from the last week of May into the first weeks of June, and the limestone water carries a wide spread of other fly as well. The river keeper, Wayne Smith, is sometimes on hand with advice.

One to three rods fish it a day, alongside some season rods. Parking is close to the water, there is a shepherd’s hut for shelter, and dogs are not allowed. The beat is within five minutes’ walk of the village and The New Inn. For 2026 a day rod is £155 in the early season, £195 through the mayfly from 19 May to 15 June, £155 again to the end of July and £125 from August, with grayling days at £77 in October and November.
