The Bull Hotel’s water on the River Coln at Fairford runs for about a mile and a quarter downstream from the main road bridge in the middle of the town. It holds wild brown trout and grayling, and the river changes all the way down, from fast, shallow gravelly runs to deeper slow pools.

The top of the beat is an island, reached over a footbridge in White Hart Court, across the road from the back of the hotel. Its lower end is wooded and easiest to fish by wading, and houses back onto the river here, so wade on the far side when you are in front of their gardens. The main beat picks up just above Dilly’s Bridge, at the bottom of the island, and runs for about another mile down the left bank to a second footbridge. No fishing upstream of Tap Cottage.

It is fly only, dry fly or nymph with one dropper, barbless hooks and catch and release. A footpath follows the whole beat, so watch your back cast for walkers and dogs. Bailiffs may ask to see your permit. For 2026 a half day is from £45 and a full day from £75 between April and October, and a winter grayling day is £50.
