Fishing methods
The Dartmoor Fishery is the Duchy of Cornwall’s water on the Dartmoor estate, some 26 kilometres of the East and West Dart and their tributaries: the Blackabrook, Cowsic, Cherrybrook, Stannon Brook, Wallabrook and Swincombe. It is wild moorland fishing for brown trout, with some sea trout and the occasional salmon.
The Passport reports that the mid and lower sections of the West and East Dart, with more tree cover, fish best through hot, low water, while the smaller moorland tributaries can be hard going then. Dry fly and nymph fishing for feisty moorland trout is the usual method, with fish of 14 inches and more showing at times. Parking is easiest at Two Bridges, Cherrybrook Bridge, Hexworthy Bridge, Dartmeet, Bellever and Postbridge, and some stretches mean a long walk, so take an OS Explorer OL28 map. Mobile signal is often missing. Parts of the water lie inside Dartmoor’s military firing areas, so check the firing programme before you go.
Permits come as a day permit or a 2026 season permit. A brown trout day permit costs 5 Fish Pass tokens and a salmon and sea trout day permit 10 tokens. Season permits cost £70 for brown trout and £150 for salmon and sea trout. Permits are sold through the Westcountry Angling Passport and at Two Bridges Hotel and James Bowden and Sons in Chagford.

The river
River
The River Dart rises high on Dartmoor as two separate streams, the East Dart and the West Dart, which join at Dartmeet. From there it runs south and east out of the moor, past Buckfast Abbey and through Buckfastleigh, Dartington and Totnes. At Totnes a weir marks the point where the river becomes tidal, and below it…
