Double bank

Netherbridge Court is about 1.5 kilometres of mixed single and double bank on the Tamar near Launceston, in an open, wide floodplain. There are eight pools, long glides and wide riffles, which suit fly fishing for brown trout and grayling.

An upstream dry fly does well when there is a hatch, and a New Zealand style rig can be deadly on quieter days. Euro nymphing often finds the larger fish. At the right time of year the beat also gives sea trout, known locally as peal, and the occasional salmon. The Passport says grayling have become more popular here in October and again from January to February.

Fly, spinner, maggot and worm are allowed, with worm only between 16 June and 31 August. Use barbless or de-barbed single hooks. A day costs 4 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.

River

The River Tamar forms most of the border between Devon and Cornwall, which is why it sits here under Devon only. It rises on a high, windswept plateau close to the north Cornish coast, then turns its back on the sea and runs south across the whole peninsula to Plymouth Sound, about 61 miles in all. Up in the…
