Netherbridge is about 900 metres of right bank on the middle Tamar, a classic stretch of long runs and large pools. It holds wild brown trout and grayling, with sea trout and the odd salmon when there is enough water, and the Passport lists it as one of its most popular beats.

The mayfly hatch here is long and plentiful, and caddis and midge hatches are worth fishing too. Dry fly and nymph take most of the trout and grayling, while euro nymphing and streamers tend to find the bigger fish. Salmon and sea trout fishing is best from June onwards, and the Passport suggests a single handed fly rod of 9 to 10 feet rated 6 to 9 weight for salmon. Fly, spinner, maggot and worm are all allowed, with worm only between 16 June and 31 August and no spinning for grayling. Wading is common, in chest waders with a staff, because the rocks are slippery and the water is coloured.

A day costs 4 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.

River

The River Tamar forms most of the border between Devon and Cornwall, which is why it sits here under Devon only. It rises on a high, windswept plateau close to the north Cornish coast, then turns its back on the sea and runs south across the whole peninsula to Plymouth Sound, about 61 miles in all. Up in the…
