About Swinton Estate

Swinton Estate, a mile outside Masham in Wensleydale, offers river fishing on the River Ure and the River Burn: four miles of single bank on the Ure, and over six miles of double bank on the Burn.

The Ure holds salmon, wild brown trout and grayling. The estate says the water quality has improved a great deal over the last 35 years, and that habitat work with the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust and a smolt release programme have lifted juvenile salmon numbers at some sites to match the best salmon rivers in the country. Salmon and grayling day tickets for the Nutwith stretch are booked online through FishPal. Trout day tickets are not sold online and are by special arrangement with FishPal or the estate.

The River Burn rises on Masham Moor, runs down through Colsterdale past Healey and Fearby, and joins the Ure just south of Masham. Along with the upper Ure, it is otherwise closed to the public and is fished on guided days with the estate’s Northern Fishing Company, led by Marina Gibson, a Fly Fishers International certified instructor. Leighton Reservoir on the estate has its own listing.
