The Little Dart River is a tributary of the Taw in mid Devon. It is not a branch of the River Dart, which is a different river in the south of the county. It rises near Witheridge and flows west for about twelve miles, passing Chulmleigh, before it joins the Taw. The Environment Agency has a level gauge at Chulmleigh, so you can see how the river is running before you set out.

The Taw rises on Dartmoor and small rain-fed rivers in this part of Devon rise and fall quickly. A few dry days can leave the Little Dart low and clear, and a wet spell can colour it and send it up, so the level matters more than the date.

We do not yet have a sourced account of the species the Little Dart holds, so we have not guessed. Parts of it are offered to visiting anglers through a day permit scheme, and the permit is the place to check what you can fish for, the season and the method.

If you are unsure what the water offers, it is best treated as small stream fishing: light tackle, quiet wading, and short, accurate casts.
