Fish species

Anglers on the River Teign can target brown trout, sea trout and salmon. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Teign rises on Dartmoor and is about 31 miles long. It has two sources: the North Teign, which rises at Teign Head, and the shorter South Teign, which passes through Fernworthy Forest. They join at Leigh Bridge near Chagford, and the river leaves the moor on its eastern side, running beneath Castle Drogo in a steep-sided, wooded valley.

Below that it flows south past Dunsford and Chudleigh, takes in the Bovey, and goes between Kingsteignton and Newton Abbot before turning east and becoming an estuary that reaches the English Channel at Teignmouth.

On the lower Teign the main interest is salmon and sea trout, though good brown trout are caught as well. In 2021 the local association reported a good number of salmon, most of them caught after mid June, and close to 500 sea trout. Visitors can fish three beats on a day permit.

Like the other Dartmoor rivers, the Teign is rain fed, so check the level before you go.
