Percy’s is a beat on the River Barle at Dulverton, the first the Dulverton Angling Association bought outright. Every salmon running up the Barle to spawn passes through it.

It has a number of large pools and broken water between them. A downstream nymph or an upstream dry fly both work, and while many of the trout are four to six inches there are bigger brown trout too. Power lines cross the beat in several places and the warning notices are on the bank, not visible from the water, so keep your back cast low, especially when wading.

The lane down to the beat off Chapel Street is very narrow and cars have been damaged on it. The association suggests parking in the main car park by the town bridge and walking, which takes about five minutes. Lance Nicholson’s shop is close by for local advice and flies.

From there it runs past Simonsbath, under the old stone bridge at Landacre near Withypool and through the prehistoric clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, then…
