Beat 3a is a section of the River Barle Fishing Club’s water on the River Barle, sold through the Fish The Exe scheme. It starts a few hundred yards below Tarr Steps and runs where the river follows the road to Hawkridge, fished from the right bank.

It holds trout and salmon and is fly only. Tickets are rare: a single rod, for a day or an evening, on one of the club’s two Fish The Exe beats on any weekday before mid August, and only ten day tickets are sold each season. A salmon day costs £30, a salmon evening £15 and a trout day £10, and you need to be a member of the Dulverton Angling Association or the River Exe and Tributaries Association first. Tickets are booked through Lance Nicholson Tackle.

Come down Marshclose Hill from Hawkridge towards Tarr Steps. A car can be parked on the bank about halfway along the beat. Thigh waders are the minimum, and chest waders and a wading stick are advisable in higher water.
