Long Lake is the second of Holbury Lakes Trout Fishery’s one-acre waters, and the name describes it well: a long, narrow stretch rather than a round pool, running beside the river with wild flowers along its banks through the summer. The riverside bank is flat and easy going, and there’s enough open ground here that it doubles as the fishery’s preferred water for tuition.
Most of the lake holds at two metres or more, and the length gives plenty of room to search with a longer line without crowding another rod, or to work steadily down the margins picking out fish one at a time. Wet fly, dry fly and nymph are all allowed, the same wider rulebook as the other three lakes, wider than the fly-only, dry-and-nymph water on the fishery’s River Dun stretch.
Rainbow trout and blue trout are stocked across the four lakes. Tickets are sold by the fish, two, three or four at a time, catch and kill rather than catch and release, with every fish taken logged in the return book and nil returns entered too.
Tickets start from £150.

Fishing rules for Long Lake
Only fly fishing is allowed, one single hook, maximum size 8. Wet fly, dry fly and nymph may all be used on the lakes. On the lakes it is catch and kill only, and once you reach your ticket’s fish limit you must stop fishing, though you can buy another ticket. All fish caught must be weighed and recorded in the return book, nil returns included. No wading or swimming, no litter, radios or animals. One non-fishing guest per angler, and every angler needs a landing net and a priest. A current Environment Agency rod licence is required on the day. Gates open at 8.30am; if you arrive early, park on the village green rather than Holbury Lane.
