Double bank

The Pond is the smallest of Holbury Lakes Trout Fishery’s four lakes, about half an acre, and sits closest to the car park. The bank is flat and secure underfoot, which combined with plenty of room for casting makes it the lake Holbury itself points beginners toward.

Depths run two to four metres, and the Pond carries a good head of stocked fish, so newcomers can expect steady sport without hunting hard for a taker. Wet fly, dry fly and nymph are all allowed on the lakes, a wider rulebook than the fly-only, dry-and-nymph-only water on the fishery’s own stretch of the River Dun next door.

Rainbow trout and blue trout are stocked across all four lakes. Every ticket here is catch and kill rather than catch and release, sold by the fish: two, three or four at a time, with a combined adult-and-child four-fish ticket for anyone bringing a child under sixteen. Every fish kept has to be weighed and logged in the return book, and nil returns go in too.

Tickets start from £150.

Fishing rules for The Pond

Only fly fishing is allowed, one single hook, maximum size 8. Wet fly, dry fly and nymph may all be used on the lakes. On the lakes it is catch and kill only, and once you reach your ticket’s fish limit you must stop fishing, though you can buy another ticket. All fish caught must be weighed and recorded in the return book, nil returns included. No wading or swimming, no litter, radios or animals. One non-fishing guest per angler, and every angler needs a landing net and a priest. A current Environment Agency rod licence is required on the day. Gates open at 8.30am; if you arrive early, park on the village green rather than Holbury Lane.
