Bickleigh is about a mile of the River Exe on the Amory family’s land, on the A396 about half a mile north of Bickleigh village. It takes in the Black Bridge pool and is fished fly only for trout, grayling and salmon.

The beat is open Monday to Friday. Unless you live outside the area it can only be booked a few days ahead of your day. A ticket costs £30 for the day or £15 for an evening after 5pm, and you need to be a member of the River Exe and Tributaries Association first. Tickets are booked through Lance Nicholson Tackle.

Parking is at the gate entrance, marked with a red P, or anywhere along the track beyond it. Please close the gates and keep the entrance and track clear. Walk down to the river; the places to get in and out are marked with cover strips on the barbed wire. RETA asks for nil returns as well as catches, by email or phone, and its code of practice applies.

Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
