Bolham is a beat on the Maund family’s land, reached from the A396. The association describes it as a previously prolific beat, particularly in the spring, with many deep holding areas and some good fly pools, and work in 2025 has opened up the way to the water. It is right bank only, two rods are available, and it can be fished seven days a week for trout, grayling and salmon.

A ticket costs £30 for the day or £15 for an evening after 5pm, and you need to be a member of the River Exe and Tributaries Association first. Tickets are booked through Lance Nicholson Tackle.

To find it, take the A396 over Stoodleigh bridge, take two left turns and carry on for about a mile to a layby on the left. You can also carry on for half a mile and turn left into Marsh Farm, park in the yard and go through the gate and over the small bridge to the fields. At the layby there is a sluice gate across the leat that can be crossed with care but not in high water, and a bridge across the leat about 60 metres further along the road. RETA’s code of practice applies and nil returns are asked for.

Approximate location

The river

River

The River Exe rises at Exe Head on Exmoor, near Simonsbath, which is in Somerset. Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
