Stuckeridge is about 1200 metres of the River Exe running downstream from Stuckeridge Bridge at Black Cat to Chain Bridge, north of Tiverton, with nine named pools and runs. Fish The Exe calls it a very pretty and productive beat, easy to wade and fish, and it produces salmon, grayling, brown trout and the very occasional sea trout. Like most of the middle Exe it needs rain to fish well.

The river is about 20 yards wide and suits a 10 to 12 foot fly rod. Both banks are fished apart from the bottom 350 yards, which is right bank only; the top two pools fish best from the left bank and the rest from the right.

Tickets are infrequent: one rod from 5.30pm on some weekday evenings, and the occasional full Saturday, offered as they come up. Two other day rods also fish the evening session. A weekday salmon evening costs £15, a Saturday salmon day £30 and a trout and grayling day £10, and you need to be a member of the River Exe and Tributaries Association first.

Approximate location

The river

River

The River Exe rises at Exe Head on Exmoor, near Simonsbath, which is in Somerset. Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
