Double bank

Bend Pool is about 800 metres of single bank fishing on the River Exe just upstream of Exebridge, from the right bank, up to the first small weir above the old railway bridge. It is a Dulverton Angling Association beat and is also sold on the Fish The Exe scheme.

Most of it is a sweeping right hand bend, and the fishing is in casting towards the deeper water on the outside of the bend. It holds some good brown trout and grayling, an occasional salmon and sometimes an escaped rainbow. Dry fly, wet fly and nymph can all work. Fish The Exe describes the river here as about 20 yards wide, best fished with a 10 to 12 foot fly rod, with easy walking and grayling fishing in winter. Power lines cross the river overhead.

You reach the beat through Exe Valley Fishery, and anglers may use the fishery car park; its lakes and leat are not part of the fishing. Fish The Exe sells tickets for two rods every day: £30 for a salmon day, £15 for a salmon evening and £10 for a trout day, with River Exe and Tributaries Association membership needed first.

Approximate location

The river

River

The River Exe rises at Exe Head on Exmoor, near Simonsbath, which is in Somerset. Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
