Hele Beat is on the upper River Exe, the stretch the Dulverton Angling Association calls the Little Exe, near Dulverton. It runs from the weir just downstream of Hele Bridge to the bridge at Weir Yard, where Perry Beat begins.

Stands of conifers come right down to the bank in places, which can make it feel gloomy, but the association describes it as both productive and challenging. The top of the beat is a bit of a walk and is lightly fished, and work has been done to let more light onto the river and give the fish more cover. The river is about five yards wide and a small rod suits it. It is mainly trout water, with grayling and the occasional salmon.

Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
