Fishing methods
Hollam is the longest of the Dulverton Angling Association’s beats, about 2km of the upper River Exe beside the A396 north of Dulverton, fished from the right bank looking downstream. Allow a full day to explore it.
It has a good variety of pools, riffles and glides. The dogleg pool at the bottom often holds rising fish, there are a couple of good pools between the ford and the remains of a weir, and the glide above the weir often rewards a dry fly. Above the footbridge there is a straight run of broken water below the road, and then the river bends left into a series of pools. The river is about five yards wide and a small rod suits it.
To find it, leave Dulverton on the B3222 for about a mile and a half to the junction with the A396, turn left towards Minehead, and after about a mile there is a gap in the stone wall with a fingerpost to a footbridge, roughly halfway along the beat. There is no parking by the footbridge.
