Oakford Beat is a very short stretch of the River Exe owned by the Dulverton Angling Association, just north of the Black Cat junction on the A396. It is fished from the right bank and has two main runs.

Brown trout, grayling and salmon are the fish here, with the occasional escaped rainbow trout, which the association asks to be taken out. Because it is so short it will not take much angling pressure and is only suited to an hour or so of fishing.

Go over Oakford Bridge and park alongside the cottage as shown on the beat map, then walk back to the bridge and go in through the gate. The gate opens onto the householder’s lawn, so please respect it.

Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
