Perry Beat is on the River Exe near Dulverton. It starts below the bridge at Weir Yard and runs down past the junction with the River Haddeo to Perry Bridge, then carries on as single bank fishing for one more field, to a small side stream that marks the bottom.

The first stretch down to the Haddeo is normally fairly productive and holds grayling. Below the junction the river straightens out, and the association has been putting in kickers to vary the flow and give the fish cover. The last 200 metres above Perry Bridge has a good long pool, and the section below the bridge, with a pool above a small sill and a very deep pool below it, is arguably the best water on the beat. There are deep holes there, so wade with care and use a staff. Electricity cables cross the beat in two places.

River

The River Exe rises at Exe Head on Exmoor, near Simonsbath, which is in Somerset. Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish…
