Fishing methods
The Exe Vale beat is several hundred yards of the River Exe near Tiverton, fished by day ticket under DG Fishing. It runs from a deep pool through steady glides to faster, broken water. Dry fly works well through the summer, and with plenty of caddis and freshwater shrimp about, buggy wet flies and nymphs also take fish.
The trout season runs from 15 March to 30 September, fly only. Winter grayling fishing runs from 1 November to the end of February, and bait is allowed from October to February. Salmon fishing is allowed on a trout ticket as long as you hold the right Environment Agency licence, and every salmon must go back.
Only one angler or two friends fish the beat each day, and it must be booked and paid for in advance with John Deprieelle. If heavy rain spoils the day, the fishery lets you rebook for another. Waders are a must for most of the water.
