Fishing methods
Marske Waters is the upper trout water of Richmond and District Angling Society on the River Swale, fished with fly or worm only. The north bank runs about 3.5 miles downstream from Downholme Bridge to Lowenthwaite Farm. The south bank is around 2.4 miles, split in two by land at Underbanks Farm that the club does not have. Fences and field restrictions mean you may only be able to walk the whole north bank at low water.
This part of the river holds only trout, so it is closed from 1 October until 25 March. Day permit holders can fish the Marske water as far as Marske Bridge. Upstream of the bridge, and the Oxque beat above Downholme Bridge, are for members only.
There is parking at Downholme Bridge for the upper north bank and at the Round Howe public car park, which is paid, for the lower part, about a kilometre from the start of the beat. On the south bank there is limited parking on the A6108, so take care with traffic. Every fish goes back, and a day permit is bought online from the society.

Fishing rules for Marske Waters
Every angler needs an Environment Agency rod licence, which is not included in the day permit, and must carry the permit. All fish are returned alive and no fish may be killed or removed. No more than two rods. Single barbless or nipped barbed hooks only, with no double or treble hooks; any double or treble on a lure or spinner must be replaced with a barbless single. No keep nets, and landing nets must be knotless. Between 25 March and 15 June there are no swim feeders, groundbait or maggots, and hook baits are limited to fly, worm, stonefly, lures and spinners. The river is closed to all fishing from 15 to 24 March. Day permits run from 6.00am to 10.00pm, with no night fishing. A catch return must be filed within 24 hours of every session, even a blank one. No dogs. Check, clean and dry kit before leaving the river to stop the spread of invasive species.
