About Osprey Fly Fishers Association
Osprey Fly Fishers Association is a fly fishing club set up in 1971 from a fly tying class in Ynysybwl and based in a former chapel vestry at Glancynon Terrace, Abercynon, where members meet on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm for fly tying and fishing talk. Its river water runs down the Taff from Upper Boat, through Pontypridd, Cilfynydd and Grovers Field to the junction with the Cynon at Abercynon, with a stretch of the Rhondda from its junction with the Taff to the Trehafod footbridge and a stretch of the Cynon from Pontcynon industrial estate to Mountain Ash hospital. It also has rights on the Usk at Brecon and a block licence for the Brecon Beacons Reservoir.
The Taff is fished for wild brown trout from 3 March to 30 September, and for grayling with the fly from 1 October to 28 February on the Taff, Rhondda and Cynon stretches. The club says it is now strictly catch and release on its rivers, with barbless or de-barbed hooks, and Taff salmon must be returned under Natural Resources Wales byelaws. The club asks that catches are not posted on social media, because large fish shown online brought unwanted attention to its water.
A day pass costs £10 from the club’s online shop, the clubroom or outlets in Pontypridd and Cardiff. Annual membership is £65 for an adult, £35 for over 65s and the registered disabled and £15 for juniors under 16, and the committee vets every applicant. Membership runs for 12 months from 1 March and also covers the club’s members only fishing lake. A rod licence is needed.
