About Afan Valley Angling and Conservation Club
Afan Valley Angling and Conservation Club was founded in 1951 and offers wild brown trout, sewin and salmon fishing on the River Afan, a small spate river that runs through the Afan Valley to the sea at Port Talbot. The club has the fishing from the Afandale pool at Cymmer down to 20 yards above Mansel Weir, at the Green Park Industrial Estate in Aberafan. There is no fishing on the Corrwg or Gwynfi sections of the river, and Beat A in the Afan Forest Park, between Rhyslin, Pontrhydyfen and Duffryn, needs a separate fish return. The club describes a committee that has helped the river recover from the industrial age to a point where its salmon run keeps growing.
Brown trout are fished from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, and night fishing for salmon and sea trout needs the Natural Resources Wales migratory fish permit. A day permit is £25 and a weekly permit is also sold, for trout and migratory fish, and a junior permit is £13 for all fish. Day permits are arranged through the club’s head bailiff, and the Fishing Passport sells day tickets for the same water. Full membership is £50, concessionary membership for disabled anglers and over 65s is £18, and junior membership is £13, with one free junior permit for each full member who asks for it when applying. Membership enquiries go to the membership secretary. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
