About fly fishing in Wrexham
Fly fishing in Wrexham is river fishing, for brown trout and grayling on the smaller waters and for salmon and sea trout (sewin) on the Dee. Of the 16 waters we list, 11 are on the Dee, 4 are on the Ceiriog and 1 is on the Alyn. No stillwater is listed. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
Most of the Dee water belongs to clubs. Llangollen Maelor Angling has its two lowest beats in the county, Ddol Issa, reached from the A5 near Froncysyllte, and The Bathers, which runs from Bont Bridge at the Pontcysyllte aqueduct for about 1.8 miles. Both are fished on the club’s trout and grayling day ticket at £25, bought online or from its ticket outlets in Llangollen and Corwen. The club’s tariff page shows no year, so confirm the price when you book. It lists no salmon day ticket, all salmon must be returned and spinning for trout and grayling is not allowed.
Bangor-on-Dee Salmon Anglers fish over 10 miles of the Dee from the village, about five miles south east of Wrexham. We list seven of its beats, and only the Village beat takes visitors: the right bank from the new road bridge down to Graig Cottages, about two miles. The club’s 2025 tariff lists salmon at £20 a day or £70 a week and trout at £10 a day or £40 a week, with trout fly only. Tickets are sold at The Middle Shop in Bangor-on-Dee, and all fish must be returned. The other six beats, Pickhill, The Captain’s, Rodens Hall, Done’s Meadow, The Chicken Sheds and Old Lower Hall, are for members. The 2025 tariff gives adult membership at £95 with a £10 joining fee. Upstream of the village, Bryn y Pys Estate holds the Dee between Erbistock and Bangor-on-Dee and offers its salmon rods as they become available. The Fishing Passport lists a full season rod at £375 with no year shown, two rods to a beat. To ask about a rod, contact the estate office.
Corwen and District Angling Club is members only and does not sell day tickets. We list its Coed yr Allt beat on the Dee near Halton at Chirk, single bank water that ends where the Ceiriog joins the Dee, and four beats on the Ceiriog from Pontfadog down to the confluence. The Ceiriog is a steep, fast river of brown trout, with sea trout and, around Chirk, grayling. Fishing there is fly only with barbless hooks, brown trout under 23cm go back and so does every grayling. The club’s 2026 rates for new members are £100 for adult trout and grayling or £160 with salmon, each with a £70 joining fee.
The Alyn is the exception. Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers’ Club manages about two and a half miles from the railway bridge at Rossett up to Wormswood at Gresford. It is a small, rain fed river with alkaline water, fished for wild brown trout and grayling, fly only with barbless or de-barbed hooks. A day ticket is £20 a rod, two rods a day, through the Fishing Passport or the club’s Clubmate page. The river rises fast after rain, so check the Natural Resources Wales level before you set out.
If you are visiting for a day, the Alyn, the Llangollen Maelor day ticket and the Bangor-on-Dee Village beat are the places to start. Ceiriog fishing means joining Corwen and District.

Fish species in Wrexham
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Wrexham
The map above plots Wrexham's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Dee rises near Slopes of Dduallt, above Llanuwchllyn, and the River Ceiriog rises near South east slopes of Moel Fferna, in the Berwyn Mountains. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Wrexham
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Wrexham's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
