About Amwell Magna Fishery
Amwell Magna Fishery describes itself as the oldest angling club in Britain still fishing the same water, a stretch of the Old River Lea in Hertfordshire that Izaak Walton fished in the seventeenth century. The fishery as it stands today began in 1831, and the club’s own history puts its water at two miles of the river between Ware and Stanstead Abbotts, below Amwell Hill. The club says brown trout can still be watched spawning there in the autumn.
Members fish a single upstream fly. The club says there is no dry fly code, and that nymphing is regarded as every bit as skilful as fishing the dry fly. Amwell Magna is a small club with limited opportunities for new members and a waiting list. Enquiries are made by email to the club secretary through the membership enquiries page of its website.
