About Old River Lea, Amwell Magna Fishery

Amwell Magna Fishery’s water is a stretch of the Old River Lea at Great Amwell, near Ware, the river Izaak Walton fished in the seventeenth century. The club’s own history describes two miles of river between the Tumbling Bay weir at Ware and the village of Stanstead Abbotts, below Amwell Hill. It calls it one of the few remaining stretches of the original Lea, and perhaps the last place on the river where brown trout can still be watched spawning in the autumn.
