About Groe Park and Irfon Angling Club
Groe Park and Irfon Angling Club fishes the Wye and its tributary the Irfon at Builth Wells. It controls about two and a half miles of double and single bank on the Wye and about a mile of the Irfon, and says the water ranges from deep rocky pools to gravel flats, so there is usually something fishable whatever the river height. Brown trout, grayling and salmon are the game fish, with chub, dace and pike among the coarse fish. The club also runs Llyn Alarch, a coarse lake, which this listing does not cover.
Visitors are welcome throughout the year. In 2026 a visitor permit for trout is £15 for a day or £20 for three days, and for salmon £15 for a day or £35 for three days. Permits are sold in Builth Wells at Nibletts the ironmongers and Conti’s Newsagents, both in the High Street, and the permit sellers also have a map showing the boundaries and the fly only stretches. Anyone over 11 needs a rod licence. Spinning for trout is forbidden at any time, and the use of barbless or debarbed hooks is mandatory.
Local membership is for people living permanently within 12 miles of St Mary’s Church in Builth Wells: in 2026 it is £20 for trout and £34 for salmon. The club also takes a limited number of country members: £45 for trout, £90 for salmon and £35 for coarse fishing. There is a waiting list for country salmon and trout membership, and none for coarse. Contact the club by email.
