About River Wye, Builth Wells
This is Groe Park and Irfon Angling Club’s water on the Wye at Builth Wells, about two and a half miles of double and single bank. The club has the right bank alongside The Groe, the riverside park, to a short distance below the main road bridge where the Tanhouse Brook enters. On the left bank its fishing starts several hundred yards above the Aber Pool, where the Irfon joins the Wye, runs down to the main road bridge, and carries on for about a mile and a half to the bottom of the Power Station Pool, where the Cnithio Brook enters.
The club says salmon depend on high water to come up the river and that the second half of the season offers the best chance, with early fish arriving in late May. Fly is the best method in all but the highest water. It describes the grayling as very plentiful, the home of its Grayling Masters competition, and the trout fishing as good fly fishing with many fish around a pound. The club also mentions chub, dace and pike.
Visitors can buy a day permit for trout or for salmon at £15 in 2026, or a three day permit at £20 or £35. Permits are sold in Builth Wells High Street. The position shown is approximate: the club describes its water by landmarks and publishes a map.
