About River Irfon, Builth Wells
About a mile of the River Irfon at Builth Wells, from the Aber Pool, where it meets the Wye, up to the head of the Black Pool. From the Black Pool down to the Aber Pool the club has the right bank. Between the Black Pool and the notice board below the Larder Pool the club has no rights, but upstream it fishes both banks from the top of Rookery Wood down to that notice board, which takes in the Larder Pool and the run below it, and the fishing resumes from the top of the Caer Beris Chalet Park.
The club offers wild fly fishing for brown trout, grayling and chub. The Irfon is not stocked, although some fish from the club’s Wye stocking make their way upstream, and the club says trout over four pounds are still hooked each year. The fishing is described as exceptional in September when fish move up from the Wye to spawn. Salmon can be caught from June in high water, especially at the Larder Pool. In May and June, shad run the river and must be returned unharmed. Wading is necessary on much of it, but the Black Pool cannot be waded because it is fifteen feet deep.
Visitors buy the same permits as for the Wye: £15 for a day for trout or salmon in 2026. The position shown is approximate.
