About the River Afan
The River Afan, Afon Afan in Welsh, rises on the northern slopes of Mynydd Llangeinwyr, east of Blaengwynfi, and runs south west, roughly parallel to the River Neath. It passes Cymmer and Afan Argoed Country Park, takes in the River Pelenna at Pontrhydyfen, and then turns south through Cwmafan to Port Talbot. The name Aberafan means the mouth of the Afan.
For most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the river was badly polluted by the coal and iron industries. Better regulation and the clean up of old mine water in the 1960s and 1970s brought it back, and weirs on the river have been made passable for fish.
It is a steep, flashy river. Through the lower valley the channel is hemmed in by brick and concrete walls in places, with natural pools and riffles between. Salmon run the river in modest numbers. Sea trout come in from May, with the bulk of the run in midsummer, and most anglers target them. Small wild brown trout are found throughout.
