About Guash Fishing Club
Guash Fishing Club is a river club formed in 1921 on the River Gwash, which the club spells Guash. It fishes for wild brown trout and grayling on about nine miles of the Gwash, which flows out of Rutland Water and winds through Great Casterton and Ryhall to join the Welland north of Stamford, and on the River Welland at Harringworth on the Rutland border and at Uffington, east of Stamford. The waters are privately owned and looked after by the club’s river keepers.
Membership is limited to 130 members and the club says it has a short waiting list. Applications to join or renew are taken each January through the membership secretary, and an applicant who is not offered a place can go on the waiting list. A joining fee of £240 is paid once, then £200 a year, and up to five young members aged 18 to 21 can join at half the adult subscription. Members receive maps, rules, a car sticker, an identity badge and newsletters, and their concessionary guest tickets.
Members fish with the fly from 1 April to 29 October, or as the Environment Agency byelaws allow, and fly fish for grayling on the Gwash in the close season. Fishing is suspended when the water reaches 19 degrees centigrade. Hooks are barbless, no dog may be taken to the river, no trout under 9 inches may be killed and no more than one brace a week. The club encourages catch and release, and members record catches on Clubmate.
