About the River Gwash

The River Gwash is a tributary of the River Welland, about 24 miles long, flowing through Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. It rises just outside Knossington in Leicestershire, near the western edge of Rutland, and runs west to east through Rutland Water, the reservoir formed by damming its valley at Empingham. A controlled flow leaves the reservoir to keep the river running past Tolethorpe, Ryhall and Stamford. It joins the Welland at Newstead Bridge, just east of Stamford, where the confluence was restored in 2021.
