About River Gwash, Guash Fishing Club water
This is the Gwash water of Guash Fishing Club: about nine miles of a small limestone trout stream that flows out of Rutland Water, through Great Casterton and Ryhall, to join the Welland north of Stamford. The club splits it into a number of joined beats. It does not say where each begins and ends, so the position shown is approximate.
Brown trout are the main fish, with grayling as well. The club stopped stocking trout in 2002 and the fish are wild, free rising and can grow to three pounds. The flow is steady, because the river is regulated at the Rutland Water dam. It is stalking water, with short rods, light lines and small flies, and the banks have trees and bushes to catch the fly. Everything is fished from the bank, and the club keeps a river keeper to maintain the popular beats.
You fish it as a member. Membership is limited to 130, applications are taken each January, there is a short waiting list, and the joining fee is £240 with a £200 annual subscription.
